Ietermagog

Iessegrimmige Ietermagog - aka Cantankerous Pangolin (and you can get the full story behind the name while sailing) is the culmination of a four year project building a 42ft dhow from scratch starting on the shores of the estuary at Fim do Mundo in Mogincual. Made from solid teak, each rib was cut to order by local woodmen in the surrounding forest. The only plans were those in the memory of an old boat builder who used the traditional Arab jahazi sailing dhow as a model for the hull.
When the hull was complete, she was sailed around to Nacala and the cabin crafted into existence according to plans existing only in our dreams, and what an incredible thing it is to have something turn out even better than you imagined.
Combining the romance of the old with the convenience of the new, she has wooden pullies next to an electric winch, brass fittings on the gps holder and huge cotton sails along with an inboard diesel marine motor. She accommodates people wanting an adventure, not a package holiday. Each trip is planned according to the needs and want s of the guest group and subject to the whims of the weather. Starting in the massive bay of Nacala, a route can take you to remote beaches not accessed by any road, to an ancient ruin of a Swahili fort, dated from 600AD, to amazing dive spots and wrecks or to discover and explore previously undived reefs, past Humpback whales in August to October, chasing gamefish in Summer, to the original capital of the country and a cultural World Heritage Site; Ilha de Mozambique. The options are endless. Each night Ietermagog anchors close to shore in a sheltered area and guests have the choice to sleep in their cabin or up on deck.

A maximum of six guests with the same interests - ie spearfishing or cultural sightseeing (hunters or gatherers) - are on each trip and involved in all aspects of the expedition. You don't need a sailing certificate in order to pull a rope. All you need is the ability to shout back an insult and salute the pirate flag fluttering on the stern mast. The central galley and social braai on the stern deck ensures good food and wine is an integral part of each voyage.
On diving or spearfishing charters a small tender boat is towed behind to easily access reefs and facilitate pick ups. An experienced and knowledgable skipper makes all the difference to your chances of success in this area. Gamefish endemic to the area are barracuda, dogtooth tuna, ignobilis, mirror and bluefin kingfish, sailfish and dorado, but many visitors will attest "The fish here are buggers!"
So, if it's adventure you're after, send us an email. A dhow trip can be a holiday in itself or booked in addition to your stay at Bay Diving. Let us know your ideas and we'll see what we can do with them.
Note that in June-July 2008, Ietermagog will be out of the water for one month for resealing.
